Velomotion and John have established an ongoing relationship with Retul as the leading studio in the UK. John has had the opportunity to become a Retul Instructor (see www.retuluniversity.com) alongside Todd Carver and Mat Steinmetz. This involves teaching official Retul University courses to new users throughout europe and beyond in the systems use and methodology.
This position allows Velomotion to be at the forefront of new technology and fitting philosophies in the UK and gives clients peace of mind that they are being served by highly skilled and experienced fitters at one of the only independant fit studios.
Watch this space for more exciting news and developments over the next few weeks and months.
We have a second Retul University Europe session running from August 13-15 and 17-19. These classes are aimed at those interested in bike fit and learning about the process as well as those who have bought or are contemplating buying retul systems to support their business.
The course is highly practical over the 3 days with clients attending for fit sessions throughout day 1 and 2 and then having the opportunity to be fitted yourself on day 3.
It is also a good opportunity for those who would like to be one of the fits during the course. John from velomotion and Mat from retul in Boulder, Colorado will be overseeing/teaching the classes. Anyone who would like to be fitted during these days can attend for a discounted price of £100 rather than £185. There may be a limited number of 2 bike slots where 2 bikes can be fitted for £140.
This is an exciting time as retul becomes increasingly recognized as the 'gold standard' of bike fit, assessment and measurement. John is going to be heading up the teaching across Europe as the technology expands into other countries.
There are still some slots left on the course itself- please see www.retul.com for details.
If you are interested in being fitted during the class please call 01908 686860 or John on 07773351063 for further details.
After the success of the Retul University offering last week at Velomotion, a further class has been scheduled in August. the dates will be friday 13th through sunday 15th and tuesday 17th through thursday 19th. Check out www.retul.com for further details and the retul university link. The first students were an international class coming from the UK, Norway, Spain, Greece and Korea.
There will be further opportunity for a discounted rate for fits done during this hands on teaching session. Mat Steinmetz from Retul's Boulder studio and John Dennis from Velomotion UK will be leading the teaching and the fits during these days. The cost will be £100 rather than the standard £185.
With the ongoing links with Retul in the States, Velomotion continues to establish itself as the leading Retul studio in the UK, with 2 retul certified fitters and John working as an instructor.
Next Month Todd Carver and Mat Steinmetz will be travelling to the UK from retul HQ in denver to run the first 'Retul University Europe' classes alongside John at the Velomotion studio. This is an excellent opportunity for fitters across europe to become fully certified and learn from the best in the business without having to travel to the States.
Todd and Mat head up the fitting side of the business in Denver and Colorado and have fitted many of the best US based triathletes and also several Pro road racing teams including Sky, Garmin and Lance's new Radioshack team.
Alongside John's experience as a physiotherapist, this is an ideal opportunity for people to have input from different aspects and viewpoints.
As the majority of the course will be practical and hands on, we need around 12 athletes to be willing to take part during the course and have their bikes fitted by a combination of Todd, Mat and John and those learning the system. This is an excellent opportunity which is also done at a discounted rate of £100 instead of £185.
The dates of the courses are 18-20 June and 22-24 June. If you are interested in finding out more please call 01908 686860 or email at info@velomotion.co.uk. These places will be limited - they are expected to go fast!
One of the major advantages of using the retul system for analysis is that we can accurately see what happens through the pedal stroke and measure left and right sides accurately and quickly. The pre-bike assessment that is performed before anything else is statically and functionally based. This means that we will observe and measure joint range and muscle length in isolation as well as functional closed chain movements.
Asymmetries or weaknesses will often manifest themselves whilst riding that will often fit with any particular signs and symptoms or be highlighted as an area of concern with regard to power transfer through the pedal stroke.
Proximal i.e. functional hip and pelvis stability is a key component of efficiency, comfort and power. Distal control i.e. what happens at the foot and pedal end of the kinetic chain is often blamed for alignment through the pedal stroke but is only one component of stability and control. Maintaining the foot in a good neutral position is key. Often 'off the shelf' insoles provide good enough support to align the foot in the shoe unless there are significant biomechanical issues identified- every runner does not have expensive orthotics prescribed so why would a cyclist? This should be combined with suitable cleat alignment. Cleat wedges are only used to correct a leg length discrepancy or for those 5% with extreme overly pronated feet that hit the rear chain stays! The theory that cleat wedges correct a varus forefoot is flawed - a cleat wedge under a solid soled cycle shoe will supinate the fore and rear foot i.e. tip it outwards. A cycle shoe forefoot does not move independantly of the rear foot- after all the whole theory behind using a solid sole for power transfer is that it has no give.
Conversely accurate assessment of what is happening at the proximal end of the kinetic chain is key. Weakness here will lead to poor mechanics, tightness in ITB's and the individual is missing out on an important power producer at the top of the pedal stroke. Unfortunately, no amount of cleat wedges are going to strengthen these key areas or off load ITB's. It is like chasing a symptom rather than a cause. Also the riders preferred default movement pattern will often exacerbate this problem or for example overload the lumbar spine when under load or after a long race, climb etc. This is often caused by over dominant quads and paraspinal muscles and may need consistent work on abdominal and glut stability and activation to correct.
At Velomotion, the fit process will help to identify and correct these issues. Separate sessions are available to assess and identify stability and prescribe suitable exercise programmes. please email john@velomotion.co.uk or phone 01908686860
Last month, John went back to Denver to spend another 3 days working with Todd Carver at Retul to become the only Certified Retul Fitter in the UK.
As part of the qualification, precourse lessons were undertaken and submitted. These were based on anatomy and physiology as well as bike fit theory. Todd and John have a very similar philosophy when it comes to fitting someone on their bike. The detailed physical evaluation of the rider combined with the race/training goals of the rider are a key component of individualising someone on their bike.
A long course triathlete will be fitted differently to a time triallist to a road cyclist, even if they have the same physical characteristics. Conversely, two triathletes with differing physical characteristics could be fitted differently even if they have the same goals.
The physical evaluation is an evolving process that incorporates appropriate movement patterns and assessment. Biomechanical assessment of these tests means greater added value when it comes to the actual measurement process on the bike. More often than not, areas of tightness, hip stability issues and significant muscle weakness that is picked up in the physical evaluation will manifest themselves in the measurement process. At Velomotion, these areas of concern can be diagnosed and appropriate advise given to help correct any problem areas.
For bookings made for January 2010, a 20% discount will be available off the standard price of £185. To take advantage of this offer please call the studio on 01908 686860 or John on 07773351063 for details and confirmation of the booking.
John was invited to attend the Team Sky get together last week to demo the retul system to staff and to help set up riders on their new Pinarellos.
Using the 'Zin tool', the mechanics will be able to use the stored data in order to accurately set up a riders bike between races and to replicate their position accurately from one bike to another. The system will also easily record details such as crank length to create a database for each rider.
John also measured several of the pros on their new bikes including Juan Antonio Flecha, Johnlee Augustyn, Michael Barry, Dario Cione, Morris Pissone and David Vigano. Using a tool as powerful as retul lets the rider see exactly what they are doing as they ride- the only way of accurately measuring dynamic individual movement.
